Racing and starting/finishing areas

The racing area will be in Nahant Bay.  When conditions allow the starting/finishing area will be just outside Swampscott Harbor.

Check in before start

Please check in with the Race Committee (RC) before the start of each race day/night.  Also notify the RC if you are leaving the race(s).

The course and flags

Courses are shown on the illustrations in this circular.  The RC will display the course letter (A,B, C, etc.) on a plaque.

The distance to the first mark will be determined by the RC when setting up the course.  The location of the first mark will be directly to windward of the starting line.   The signal flags in use for these races are illustrated in this circular.

Starting and finishing lines

The line will be between the staff displaying the visual signals and the mark end of the line.

Multiple Races or Fleets

When more than one race is scheduled the next race will start approximately twenty minutes after the last boat finishes the preceding race.  When multiple fleets are racing the RC will post the order the fleets will start.  Each fleets start will follow five minutes after the preceding fleet start.

Start  Sequence

Times are taken from the visual signals (flags).  The failure of a sound shall be disregarded.  Four sounds indicate a postponement or general recall/restart.

The warning signal will be at  6:20PM on Thursdays and 11:50AM on Saturdays; the postponement flag will be displayed if the race is not going to start on time.

Recalls

The RC will display the INDIVIDUAL or TOTAL RECALL flags and attempt to hail premature starters.  If you think you were over early look for the flag and listen for the hail.  One additional blast after the start will indicate an individual recall, four blasts will indicate a total recall.

Shorten the course

The RC may shorten the course for any reason, look for the COURSE SHORTENED flag at the start and when you pass the RC during the race.

Time limit

The time limit for the first boat to finish is 2 hours.  Boats failing to finish within 3 hours will be scored as DNF (did not finish).  The race will be cancelled by the RC with four blasts and display of the ABANDONMENT flag.

Scoring

The PHRF “time on time” scoring system will be used to place finishers.  Finishers shall receive points equivalent to their finishing position. (i.e. first place one point, second place two points, etc.)  Boats not finishing (DNF) will receive points equal to the number of starters plus one point.  Your best ten Saturday races and best five Thursday races will be counted towards a year end Saturday Series and Thursday Series awards.

Leaving a race

A boat should contact the RC on channel 8 to notify the RC they are leaving the race or to report an emergency.

PHRF rating

All participants must have a valid PHRF rating to race their yacht.  To receive a rating simply contact Dave Bishop 596-3971 or Brian Dove 592-0812.  They will review the make, model, and configuration of your yacht and establish the rating.
